LAPEER, Mich. — A 23-year-old man could be facing charges after trying to kill his dog by shooting it with a crossbow in the head.

According to Lapeer County Animal Control, they received a call Monday afternoon from a construction worker in North Branch that a stray dog had come up to him with an arrow in the head. When officers rushed out to get the dog, they found it was able to walk and was completely alert.

The next morning, animal control got a tip that a Goodland Township man had shot and killed his own dog with a crossbow. After investigating with the help of the Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office, they located the man.

He admitted to officers that he drove north with his dog intending to kill her. Then, according to Lapeer County Animal Control, he told them he got out of the car and shot her in the head with a crossbow. Then, officers say she ran a few yards and fell down.

According to officers, the man went to his car to get a blanket to move the dog, but when he returned, she was gone. The man told officers he tried to kill the dog because she acted aggressively toward his other animal.

Lapeer County Animal Control has filed paperwork with the prosecutor to file charges.

Gemma, the 2-year-old black Flat Coat Retriever mix is expected to make a full recovery. It turns out the arrow missed both her brain and optic nerve by just millimeters. She will stay with animal control to recover.
