A Salem man accused of trapping a cat and leaving it in the trap until it died has been charged with aggravated animal abuse.

Theodore A. Dodenhoff, 49, was arrested Friday by Salem Police and booked at the Marion County jail on one count of aggravated animal abuse, which is defined by law as maliciously killing or knowingly and intentionally torturing an animal.

Lt. Debbie Aguilar, of the Salem Police Department, said Dodenhoff trapped the cat and left it outside without food or water until it died from heat and sun exposure.

Aguilar said the incident took place on the 2000 block of Robbins Lane, off Commercial Street. The arrest followed an investigation prompted by reports from area residents.

Dodenhoff’s bail was set at $10,000, and he was scheduled to be arraigned at 3 p.m. Monday, July 27.
